Amsterdam is a fantastic base - but some of the best experiences in the Netherlands happen just outside it.
For canals without roads, Giethoorn is unmatched - a village explored entirely by boat, an hour and a half from the city. For working windmills and traditional crafts, Zaanse Schans is just 20 minutes away and easy to combine with the fishing villages of Volendam & Marken. Flower lovers should time a trip around tulip season to see the tulip fields in bloom or visit the Keukenhof flower gardens, open only from mid-March to mid-May. History and architecture fans have plenty of options too - Utrecht's two-level canals, Delft's connection to Vermeer, Rotterdam's bold modern skyline, and The Hague's mix of politics and coastline all sit within an hour or two of Amsterdam.
