Complete Guide to The Hague

Day trips

The Hague plays a bigger role than its size suggests - it's the seat of the Dutch government and home to the International Court of Justice - but it's just as worthwhile as a straightforward day out.

The Mauritshuis houses one of the country's best small art collections, including Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, while the Peace Palace and Binnenhof cover the city's political weight. For something lighter, Madurodam, a miniature version of the Netherlands, is a favourite with families. And when you've had enough of museums, a short tram ride takes you to Scheveningen Beach, where the North Sea and a lively promenade wait. For those adventurous at heart, zip-line over the ocean or ride the Feris wheel at the end of the pier.

The Hague is about 50 minutes from Amsterdam by train, and pairs naturally with a stop in Delft on the same day.
