Complete Guide to Zaanse Schans

Day trips

Just 20 minutes from Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans is a living village rather than a museum - its windmills still turn, and many of its wooden green houses are still lived in.

The windmills are the headline: several are open to walk through, and each once served a different purpose, from sawing wood to pressing oil to grinding spices. Beyond them, a working cheese farm offers tastings, a traditional clog workshop demonstrates centuries-old woodworking, and the riverside setting makes for some of the most photographed views in the country. The Zaans Museum rounds things out for anyone curious about the region's industrial history.

Because it's so close to the city, Zaanse Schans works well as a half-day trip on its own, or combined with Volendam and Marken for a fuller day exploring North Holland's countryside and coast.
