Amsterdam is compact enough that most central neighbourhoods put you within easy reach of everything - but each has a slightly different feel worth knowing about before you book.
The Canal Ring / City Centre puts you closest to the major sights and canal cruises, at the highest prices. It's the easiest choice if you only have a few days and want to walk everywhere.
The Jordaan offers a quieter, more residential alternative just a short walk from the centre, with better cafés and fewer crowds.
De Pijp suits travellers who want a livelier, more local feel - it's a bit further out but well connected, with some of the city's best food.
For a genuinely quieter base, Amsterdam Noord, just across the water, has a more relaxed pace and easy ferry access back to the centre.
If you'd rather stay just outside the city, Haarlem is a 20-minute train ride away and noticeably cheaper without losing easy access to everything Amsterdam offers.
