Giethoorn began life as a peat-digging settlement, with canals originally dug to transport turf rather than tourists — a detail that explains why the village has no roads through its centre to this day. What was once practical infrastructure is now the entire reason people visit.
The best way to experience it is by water: rent a "whisper boat" (Giethoorn's traditional quiet, electric-powered vessel) and drift between the bridges at your own pace or join a guided cruise if you'd rather have the history narrated as you go.
On dry land, a network of cycling routes connects the village to the surrounding countryside and thatched farmhouses, with longer routes threading out into the national park for anyone keen to make a full day of it.
Beyond the water, Giethoorn has two small museums worth an hour each. Museum Giethoorn 't Olde Maat Uus, set inside a preserved farmhouse, gives a genuine feel for how villagers lived before tourism arrived - old tools, costumes and a fisherman's cottage among them. Museum de Oude Aarde, a little more unexpected, houses an extensive collection of minerals, fossils and shells, and makes for a nice change of pace between boat rides.
A wander along the canal-side cafés and terraces is the easiest way to fill whatever time is left - good coffee, a plate of pancakes or a stroopwaffel, and plenty of boats to watch drift by. For those that enjoy a little retail therapy, you can also browse local boutiques.
For anyone with an extra hour or two, the neighbouring Weerribben-Wieden National Park extends the same peaceful waterways well beyond the village itself, with walking and cycling paths through reed beds and open water that make for a quieter counterpoint to Giethoorn's more visited canals.
It's a small village - most visitors comfortably cover the highlights in half a day - but its size is part of the appeal. Giethoorn isn't somewhere you rush, you slow down and enjoy its magic.
