Zaanse Schans blurs the line between village and open-air heritage site, its green wooden houses and working windmills so perfectly preserved that it's genuinely easy to forget people still live there.
Each of these rewards a slower visit over a rushed one - villages this size aren't built for a checklist pace, and the magic tends to show up in the moments you weren't rushing to photograph.
